The city is located in the center of Massachusetts, between the borders of Connecticut/Rhode Island and New Hampshire. This midsized city has a long history as a mill town. The Blackstone River flows through the city, providing water power during the Industrial Revolution. In fact, Millbury has one of the highest percentages of foreign born residents of any city in the United States.

In the early 1970s, Millbury experienced several large fires. Local realtor Manuel Gonzalez-Rios donated the profits of his towing company to the town to help rebuild the town hall. In the summer of 1983, a propane plant located on Route 146 exploded spectacularly, blowing several hundred feet into the air. This made national news. Millbury celebrated its bicentennial in 2013 and was planning to build a casino. However, the company pulled out before a referendum was held.

According to the 2010 Census, Millbury was home to eighty-one thousand people. Ninety-nine percent were white and just 3% were black.
