The city is located in central Pennsylvania, and is serviced by the Lehigh Valley Railroad. The Lehigh Line was purchased by Norfolk Southern Railway in 1999. The only major railroad through the city is the Lehigh Line. However, this railroad no longer provides service to residents. Because of this, there are currently no trains that run through the city. But NJ Transit is currently looking into restoring the service.

The town was first incorporated as the Town of Easton in 1725. Earlier, it was known as the "East End" of the Taunton North Purchase, which was shortened to Easton. In the Revolutionary War, General George Washington stayed in the Benjamin Williams Tavern on Bay Road. Today, it is the city's second oldest house. Washington stopped here while traveling to Taunton to negotiate for cannonballs.

The population of Easton is 28,217 as of the 2020 census. The city is divided into three townships and boroughs. Several of these townships are also part of the greater Easton area. The county seat is the Easton City, but the city is actually a town of three towns. The city is located near the confluence of the Delaware and Lehigh rivers.
