Clarklake City, New York was first settled by George Stranahan, who purchased 400 acres in 1834 and built a log home and orchard. His family, which consisted of his wife, two sons, and five daughters, moved to the town in 1834. The family worked the land and made improvements to the land to ensure a sustainable future. The population of Clarklake City was over three thousand people at that time.

The original settlers of the city were from Columbia Township. They were employed by the U.S. Government to survey land in this part of the territory. They were so impressed with the beauty of their surroundings that they named it "Clark's Lake". The lake itself is now a historical monument. Among other reasons, the surveyor named the lake after himself. The surveyor named it after himself because the area was the most beautiful.
