Anoka was originally a part of Blaine, Minnesota, until 1877. In that year, Irish immigrants settled near Laddie Lake. Sadly, Laddy died shortly after settling there, but his survivors went on to make Minneapolis their home. In addition, the town's name was derived from two Native American words: A-NO-KA-TAN-HAN, which means "rum river" in Dakota, and ON-O-KAY, meaning 'working waters' in Ojibwa.
