The demographics of this city are not very diverse. Twenty-seven percent of the population were under the age of 18 and 6.6% were 18-24. The remaining forty-eight percent were middle-aged and forty-five and fifty-four percent were over the age of 65. The median age was 41 years old. The town's booming economy began with the development of the Northern Pacific Railroad, which connected Brainerd to Carlton. In 1871, the railroad built its first depot in Deerwood, and more settlers moved in. In 1909, the village petitioned to be incorporated, and in 1913, the town had more than 100 businesses.
