The university was founded in 1910 and is located on the city's main campus. In 1970, the Kent State shootings occurred in this town. The Cuyahoga River and railroad were a major factor in the development of Kent. The city was home to many industries, including the Seneca Chain Company. In 1930, Kent passed Ravenna as the county's largest city and remains so.
