The population of La Crescent City is estimated at 6,479 people. There are two elementary schools and one public high school in the city. Two other elementary schools serve the city's northern part. The older of the two elementary schools is Bess Maxwell Elementary, which serves grades one through five. Previously, the school served grades K-6. The city is also home to the La Crescent Middle School, which serves grades seven through twelve.

In 2010, the city was home to 7,643 people, which is slightly below the city's current population of 6,787. It was incorporated 168 years ago in 1854. It is located in northern California near the Oregon border. Crescent City is a thriving city with many small businesses and industries. The city is home to more than 2,000 residents, with a low crime rate and high property values.

Before the Civil War, most of the city's residents were black. In 1810, nearly two-thirds of the city's citizens were black. By 1840, this percentage fell to two-fifths. In the two decades before the Civil War, the percentage of African Americans dropped even further. New Orleans' conservative banking laws promoted stability. The Bank Act of 1842 mandated that banks maintain a gold or silver reserve.

Residents of the Crescent City area have easy access to the region's public transportation systems. The city is served by U.S. Route 101, which begins just north of the city and runs southeast to Grants Pass, Oregon. The city is served by several taxi companies and Amtrak trains. In addition to local transportation, the city is serviced by Redwood Coast Transit, Curry Public Transit, and POINT.
