In 1850, the area west of Rainier was known as Kentucky Flats and Cedar Landing. Although this area was not yet incorporated into Rainier, it did form a neighborhood called Roxy Park. The population of this area was around 10,300, and as of the 2010 Census, there were four murders and three attempted murders. The neighborhood also features pubs with live music and numerous cafes and shops.

In 1913, the Women's Civic League of Mount Rainier was formed. That same year, the city opened its first public school. In 1923, it hired its first paid police officer. In 1929, the city acquired 100 acres and opened Mount Rainier High School. This area is now recognized as a historic district by the National Register of Historic Places. Despite its urban growth, residents still enjoy the charms of the early 1900s. There are two metro stations located in the city: the Rhode Island Ave station and West Hyattsville.

One of the most popular ways to get to Rainier is to travel by car. The city has several routes and highways. U.S. 1 serves as the main street and central business district. The city is also serviced by WMATA Metrobus and several lines of public transit. In addition, there are several bus routes that run along US 1 and some smaller roads in the city. The population of the city is expected to increase to 2,021 by 2020.
