The official classification of neighbourhoods in Khartoum hides the local situation and ensconces the country's privileged areas. This leaves out a large segment of the South Sudan population, which tends to live in slums and hidden from the public eye. Nevertheless, the ethnographer can see many derelict and abandoned homes in the city, which are representative of the diversity that exists within the neighbourhood.
In the outskirts of Soudan City, South Sudanese chiefs meet at a run-down guesthouse where people who are unable to afford housing are housed.
