While "Population & Steets in Midnight's" sound was not exactly mainstream alt music, it was a significant contribution to the genre. The album sounded like it belonged somewhere between pop and alternative, but it also had the distinct quality of being sonically ambiguous. Despite being released in 2011, the album was already in the midst of a transitional period after emo rock and pop-punk ruled the genre.
