Aspen Hall was built in 1745, and is now a historical landmark. During the American Revolution, Isabelle Boyd was a noted spy for the Confederacy. Her father operated a general merchandise store in Martinsburg. During World War I, her brother, Benjamin, served in the Second Virginia Infantry and the Stonewall Brigade. In 1925, they erected a monument to the men who served in the war. In addition, the Newton D. Baker Hospital treated thousands of soldiers and was later incorporated into the Veterans Administration. Today, it continues to provide care for United States veterans.
