The town was named after a pioneer family in the 1830s. Its streets were designed for horse-drawn carriages. The city was home to the Broadus Independent, which still exists today as the Powder River Examiner. The town was boosted by the Belle Creek Oil Field in the late 1960s. Today, oil and gas production still plays a large part in the community's economy.

The death of Thomas Broadus provided a new catalyst for the city's citizens to assemble. Its rapid growth gave the city a new reason to unite. Several other groups began gathering in Broadus, including the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. The march on Annapolis lasted for a month. The march on Washington Movement had inspired a group of organizers, led by A. Phillip Randolph, president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.
