The county seat of Dakota County is situated in the extreme northeast corner of the state. It shares a border with South Dakota on the north and east, and with Iowa, Dixon County, and Thurston County to the south. Dakota County was originally home to 10 town sites on the banks of the Missouri River, but only one of these remains, which is called 'Dakota City.' The town has a population of 1,919 as of the 2010 census.

The median age of residents in Dakota City was 34.6 years, with 29.3% of residents under the age of 18. There were also a large number of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Twenty-four percent of the population was between the ages of 25 and 44. Twenty-four percent were 45-64-year-olds, and 7.9% were 65 or older. The male-to-female ratio was 104.6:100.
