The 2010 census reported that the population of the city was 4,737. The city was first known as a stop on the Pony Express, and later, the transcontinental railroad. It was also a major stop along cattle drives from Texas to the Union Pacific railhead. The Union Pacific Railroad reached the town on May 24, 1867. However, it wasn't until 1875 that the city was laid out and incorporated. The name Ogallala is taken from the tribe of Oglala Sioux natives.

It also has a higher percentage of college graduates than the state average. But the number of people with a Bachelor's degree is lower than the benchmark state. The community health needs assessment was conducted by the Ogallala Community Hospital. In addition to community leaders, the board selected members based on their role in the public health arena. Among the members of the council, minority groups were identified. They each brought unique insights into the population's health needs. This process helped the leadership team identify a list of top priorities for community health programs. Despite the low number of minority populations, there are a variety of health needs and community-based concerns.
