In the early 1900s, gold mining in Goldfield brought prosperity to the town. The mines produced $86 million in gold and the miners started hiding the gold in hollow pick handles and false boot heels. In 1934, the governor of Nevada called on the President of the United States to send soldiers to the area to traffic the gold. Many notable people settled in the city, including Nevada businessman George Wingfield, cowboys Virgil and Wyatt Earp, and American boxing promoter Tex Rickard.

The Goldfield Hotel was the most luxurious hotel between Chicago and San Francisco at one time. Its exterior was made of stone and brick, and the inside was equipped with electricity and a heating system. Inside, the hotel featured rich mahogany and black leather furniture and gold-leaf ceilings. Throughout, the hotel lobby was adorned with crystal chandeliers. The town's population was approximately 4,000 people at the time.
