What is the population of East Derry City? The city is located in Northern Ireland and is home to a diverse population of people from many different cultural backgrounds. The name of the city derives from the Irish word doire, meaning oak grove. It was renamed to Londonderry in 1613, and the Protestant settlers who came from England and the lowlands of Scotland were largely disenchanted by the name. Later, as the population of native Irish Catholics increased in the area, the name was changed to Derry.
The city lies adjacent to County Donegal and has long had ties with the area. Derry is also considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Ireland, with a monastery founded in the 6th century by the famous Saint Columba. However, there is much evidence to suggest that Derry was inhabited by people many thousands of years prior to the 6th century. Today, it's home to a thriving community of Irish Nationalists.
Following the 19th century, Derry became a major migrant hub, with thousands of migrants settling in the area. This was exacerbated by the An Gorta Mor, which destroyed the city in 1608. The famous McCorkell Line, run by Wm. McCorkell & Co. Ltd., operated the famous "Green Yacht of Derry". The town's military contributed over 5,000 men to the British army. Derry Männer came from Protestant and Catholic families.
