In 2010, the population of Rockaway Borough City was 6,438. This was down from 6,473 in the 2000 Census, but up from 6,243 in the 1990 Census. The borough is located in Morris County. The Rockaway Borough Public Schools serve pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. In 2017, the district had a total of 580 students and 50 classroom teachers. The student-teacher ratio was 11.6:1. Lincoln Elementary School serves 230 students in grades PreK-3. Thomas Jefferson Middle School has 348 students in grades four through eight. Both schools are considered "affordable."

The borough was incorporated in 1894. The population reached six thousand in the 2010 census. At that time, Rockaway had two railroads to transport people between the mines and the town. One was the Morris & Essex Railroad, which connected the town to Newark and New York City. Rockaway also had clothing and shoe stores. The area's population increased to seven hundred and twenty people in 1889, and the town was a major manufacturing and commercial center.

The borough had a diverse population. Twenty-one percent of residents were under the age of 18, while thirty-one percent were in the prime working age. Fifty-one percent of households had two or more adult members. Those aged sixty-four and older represented 11.9% of the population. The median age in the borough was 38 years old, with males outnumbering females by nine-to-one.
