Before the city was incorporated, it was known as Anfa. In the 12th century, it was a fishing village. Later, it was a port for Christian ships. During the Portuguese protectorate in Morocco, the city was destroyed and rebuilt by the Portuguese. It was abandoned again in 1755 when an earthquake destroyed the town. In the 18th century, a 'Alawi sultan named the city Daru l-Badya and a trading base was established by Spanish traders. Eventually, French colonists and French settlers took over and the city was named Casablanca.
