The population of Los Ranchos has a diverse demographic profile. The town is part of the Bernalillo County, New Mexico and is located in the state of New Mexico. In 1814, the village had 65 households and 331 residents. It was the seat of Bernalillo County for a brief period. Floods in the area were frequent, and the town was severely damaged by floods in 1874 and 1891. A third flood in 1904 devastated the town. During the following decades, the area became increasingly alkaline and untillable.

The population of Los Ranchos City was 24,727 in 2000. Of this total, 9,317 were under the age of 18; 20,087 were aged 25-44; 26,869 were aged 45-64; and 7.1% were 65 and older. Those with kids in the home were mostly married couples. Single women made up 10.0% of households. Non-families comprised 17.1% of the city's population. One in six homes was vacant. The median age was 33.4.

When the railroad reached Albuquerque in 1880, many settling families began selling their land to Anglo settlers. This led to the development of small subdivisions along Rio Grande Boulevard. At the same time, the town became known as Los Ranchos because existing roads were paved and removed. During the twentieth century, the town grew to encompass the entire half-mile-long section of the Guadalupe Trail.
