The population of Athol City was 214 in 1960, and it was 312 in 1980. The population increased by 2.4 percent from 2000 to 2010 and has stayed relatively stable at about 700 people since. The area was hit hard by the Great Depression, but in the 1940s the city's population surged due to the opening of the Farragut Naval Training Station. More than 293,000 people were trained here over the course of 30 months, and the area also served as a prisoner-of-war camp for almost 900 Germans.

Athol is located in northern Kootenai County. Nearby attractions include Silverwood Theme Park, which is 4 miles west of the city. Other nearby communities include Bayview and Spirit Lake, which are 7 and eight miles away. The town is served by State Highway 54 and State Highway 95, which run north and south through the city.
