Many residents of Briarcliff Manor have longstanding roots. For example, in the early 2000s, Broadway lyricist Lee Adams lived here, and he is a trustee of the Briarcliff Manor-Scarborough Historical Society. Other notable residents include Alice Low, an author of children's books, poets, and screenplays. During the mid to late 20th century, Briarcliff Manor experienced significant growth, and it grew faster than Westchester County as a whole. The first higher education institution to open in the town was the School of Practical Agriculture and Horticulture. Founded by Walter Law in the late 1800s, the school educated 16-35 year-olds in crop care. The school relocated to a larger location near Poughkeepsie in 1902, but the school eventually closed due to lack of funding. In 1903, the school was renamed Briarcliff Junior College, and opened in the former Briarcliff Lodge. Howard Deering Johnson donated land to the college, and in 1905, Lyman Bryson and his family joined the college.
The town of Chilmark is an unincorporated residential area in the northern part of Briarcliff Manor City. It was established in 1925 and was named after the village of Chilmark, England. The town was named after the ancestor of Valentine Everit Macy, who arrived in the colonies in 1635. In 1897, he purchased a number of small family farms that are now in the town.
