The city is located on the River Hudson. The Hudson River runs through the city, with the town on the northern side. The population density is quite low, with only a few people living in the downtown core. The city has a high point called Deer Hill, which is a foothill of Storm King Mountain. The southeast boundary of the city leaves the river just north of Crow's Nest, and continues to run through Storm King State Park, including much of the Black Rock Forest and the United States Military Academy Reservation.

Cornwall has developed a reputation as a health retreat in the mid-19th century. People from city life traveled to the area to experience its therapeutic benefits. Later, it was a delicatessen, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. It dates back to Cornwall's summer resort days in the 19th century.
