Located in the North Country, the town of Dannemora was incorporated in 1901. The town was originally a hamlet, and only incorporated in 1901. The community is named after a Swedish iron ore field known as Dannemora, which first opened in 1843. In 1845, the town was home to the Clinton Correctional Facility, one of the largest in the state.

The population of Dannemora is 3,559 and consists of males and females of voting age. There are three percent residents who are over the age of 65. Those of working age make up the remaining population of the City. In terms of race, 44.2% of residents are white and 41.0% are black. There are also 0.2% of people who identify as Asian. The city has a high percentage of government employees, with 27.9% of them being federal, state, and local employees.

The prison in Dannemora City was built in the early 19th century. In the same year, the town's population was dominated by the massive stone wall surrounding the Clinton prison. During the 1845 census, the town reported that it was a Presbyterian religious society. The prison was located on a blighted land with no prospects of economic growth. It has since reverted to its normal routine.
