South Butler is a community in New York State. It was incorporated on February 26, 1826. The town is located in the eastern edge of Butler county. It is diversified in landscape with Armstrong Hill, the town's highest point, and a number of hills and valleys. The area is drained by Wolcott Creek, which rises in the N.E. and flows in a circuitous course through the town before draining itself near the N.W. corner. South Butler is a small village along the S. line, and contains five churches, a classical school, and a few manufactories. There are approximately 400 residents.

South Butler City has a diverse population. The majority of its residents are White, with only 3.7% being Hispanic or Two or More. The city is home to the Butler Little Theatre, which has been producing plays continuously since 1941. The city's Musical Theatre Guild also puts on several shows a year. There is also the Hobnob Theatre Company, which produces several plays a year, including the annual A Christmas Carol.

Butler is home to the county seat and a variety of commercial and retail offerings. The city also has a diverse industrial base, with industries ranging from textiles to wood products. There are also two industrial parks in Butler.
