Historically, Badin was a unique planned community, carved out of rugged Stanly County before the first world war. Incorporating progressive ideas from Europe, it was designed to serve industrial workers. However, the town fell on hard times as the population dwindled. Today, the population consists of under 2,000 people. The town has retained its unique French Colonial architecture and garden-city design.

The city itself is small, with brick buildings on the main street and pleasant leafy streets. There are about half White and one-third Black.
