Fullerton, California has 47,869 households and a population density of 2,140.5 per square mile or 826.5 people per square kilometer. Out of this total, 24,600 homes were owner-occupied, while 20,791 were rented out. The vacancy rate for homeowner-occupied households was 1.1%, while the vacancy rate for rental homes was 7.0%. In 2016, 58,957 people lived in the city, and nearly half of them were renters.

During the Golden Age of Fullerton, the city was surrounded by bucolic farms and parks. Major public works projects were built during this period, including the southeastern section of the Fullerton Municipal Airport, which was converted from an old sewer farm at the request of Placentia ranchers William and Robert Dowling in 1927. After the depression, the city's economy became increasingly diversified, and southeastern Fullerton developed into an industrial center.

The city is governed by a Council-Manager system, which means the city council is a board of five non-partisan members who enact policies. A city manager is appointed to oversee the city's day-to-day operations. In Fullerton, the city seal depicts some of the best qualities of the city: an orange tree that symbolizes the city's agricultural origins, a man and a woman with a child representing families, and an open book representing Fullerton's dedication to education.

There are more than 50 city parks in Fullerton. Fullerton has Hillcrest Park, Chapman Park, Ralph B. Clark Regional Park, and a historic Arboretum located in northeastern Fullerton. The city also has an equestrian center, two golf courses, and a Janet Evans swim complex. There are several national historic landmarks, including the historic Dewella complex, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
