In the 2010 census, Kief's population was thirteen. The city is part of the Minot Micropolitan Statistical Area. It was first settled in 1908. Its name comes from the Ukrainian city of Kyiv, which was a transliteration of the city's name at the time. It was first a village, then a city in 1967. Kief is located in Land Township, southwest of Drake.

The median age of the population of Kief City was 55.8 years. Of this total, 7.7% of the population was under the age of 18 years. Twenty-four percent of the population was between the ages of 45 and 64 years, while 23.1% were 65 years old and older. Gender ratio in Kief City was 53.8% male and 46.2% female.
