Washburn is a city in the state of Minnesota. Its population reached a high of 10,000 during World War II. The city is still home to some of the Dupont housing, which is located on East 3rd Street. The Marshall-Wells Hardware Company purchased the housing and moved it to Duluth after the war. There is one post office in Washburn, located at the top of West Main Street.
Crime rates are often higher in certain neighborhoods than others. For example, the south part of Washburn has more retail establishments, and crime rates may be higher there than elsewhere. However, this is only because of the fact that most crimes occur in the retail areas. Crime occurs where people congregate. So, while crime rates are higher in areas that have less people, crime rates are still low in most residential neighborhoods.
One of the most interesting facts about Washburn is that its population is almost half married. The most number of divorced residents are found in the New Odanah CDP. Its average household size is 2.9. That makes Washburn a good place to raise a family. The area is home to a diverse mix of people, and there are plenty of places to live for singles in Washburn.
There were several railroads in Washburn. During the early 19th century, the Washburn, Bayfield and Iron River Railroad was purchased by the Northern Pacific Railroad, who wanted access to the city's lucrative traffic base. The railroad also had a large logging industry. For instance, the city's lumber industry supported several weekly newspapers and employed two blacksmith shops, two liveries, and a veterinarian.
