The Prouty and Glass Carriage Factory moved to Wayne in 1888, making it one of the largest carriage manufacturers in the United States. Wayne was also a major stop on the Detroit interurban railroad, which connected the city to surrounding suburbs until 1929. From 1916 to 1921, Ray Harroun designed and produced the Harroun motor car in Wayne. During this same period, Gotfredson Trucks was also produced in the city. In addition, Stinson Aircraft located in the Detroit Industrial Airport produced small planes from 1926 to 1948.
