The city was first settled by Welsh people, and it is believed that many people were drawn by the area's mining opportunities. The town's first permanent resident, Emanuel Boyer, lived in a house on the third lot from the south side of Main street facing Centre. He was asked to settle in the area by the Little Schuylkill Company, which had bought the land from the Kunkle heirs.
