Its name comes from the river that runs through it. In addition to the river, the city is home to many parks and other recreation areas. While there is no commercial air service at the New Castle Municipal Airport, most residents fly into Pittsburgh International Airport. Other nearby airports include the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, which is 42 miles south of downtown, and Akron-Canton Regional and Cleveland Hopkins International Airports.

In the town, two radio stations are licensed. WKST 1200 is a talk station, while WUZZ AM 1280 is a sports talk station and a Fox Sports Radio affiliate. Another radio station is WKPL FM 92.1, a former full-time country station. It now broadcasts Classic Gold oldies and is owned by Froggy parent Keymarket Communications. The New Castle station is licensed on channel 45 by the FCC.

The population of New Castle peaked at 48,834 in 1950, but the city began to become part of the "Rust Belt" and its population declined to just over 28,000 by 1990.
