The population and steets of West Point City vary significantly from place to place. Although most residents consider the city's northeast part to be the safest, people from the northwest and southwest neighborhoods may be at risk for crime. The population of West Point City is estimated to be 3,364 as of the 2010 census. The town became the county seat on October 12, 1858, after a vote split between two towns. The towns each received twelve votes, and West Point won the vote. During a spring 1859 hunting excursion, about 4,000 Pawnees flooded the Elkhorn Valley. The Pawnee War ended without a fight near Battle Creek.
