In 1882, the town was officially incorporated. Originally called Campa Bella, its name was changed to Campobello due to a postal clerk's poor penmanship. The population and the number of households continued to grow slowly, and by the end of the Civil War, there were 201 people living in Campobello. The town's population increased to two hundred and twenty by 1884.
