As of the 2010 census, St. Matthews had a population of 17,472, making it the 23rd-largest in the state of Kentucky. The city is home to the fifth-largest mall in Kentucky, as well as a number of smaller shopping centers along Shelbyville Road.

The Jefferson Circuit Court incorporated St. Matthews as a sixth-class city on March 22, 1950. At the time, it consisted of approximately three-and-a-half blocks of residential property. Trustees of the city met in the home of one member and adopted an ordinance proposing the annexation of a large area. This territory included the entire residential area and the streets of the city's business district.

The city was first populated by a population of Dutch settlers. In the early 20th century, the area was the second-largest shipper of potatoes in the country. With the advent of automobiles and urban transit, the neighborhood changed. Farmland was subdivided into residential neighborhoods. Local streets still bear the names of the original landowners. The modern shopping district was developed in the 1920s, including the landmark Vogue Theater.

The area that is now known as St. Matthews has a history that dates back hundreds of years. In fact, it was home to several Indian tribes before European settlers arrived in the area. The Shawnee and the Iroquois claimed the land as their own and made the surrounding area their hunting grounds. Eventually, the area was incorporated into the city of St. Matthews.
