The population of Trent City is estimated to be 226 as of the 2020 census. The city is located in Moody County, South Dakota. The population of Trent was 232 as of the 2010 census. However, there are fewer Hispanic residents than in the rest of South Dakota. The average age is above the state average and the percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree or higher is significantly below the state average.

In 1878, the Midland Railway's line opened between Nottingham and Melton Mowbray. The line took seven years to build and was authorized by Act of Parliament in 1872. In 1879, John Chaworth Musters sold plots of land to West Bridgford, which was incorporated in 1907. In 1910, the city's first public school, West Bridgford Hall, opened at a site on the West Bridge. A year later, the township of West Bridgford incorporated the village of Edwalton. In 1921, the township had 11632 residents living in 2864 houses.

The population of West Bridgford was approximately 5,000 when the area was incorporated as a town. The main street, Central Avenue, is the town's commercial area. It contains the 'Croquet Lawn', a green space that remains undeveloped. The two arches of the former Hethbeth Bridge can be seen in the roundabout just south of the Trent Bridge. In 2005, the Manor Public House was closed. A Marks and Spencer "Simply Food" Store opened in the Town's Albert Road.
