The city of Greeneville is in northeastern Tennessee, near the Nolichucky River and the Great Smoky Mountains. It was originally a part of North Carolina but was later incorporated under Tennessee laws. The town was named for Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene. In 1816, it was the capital of the short-lived State of Franklin, which secessionists from North Carolina.
