The population of Spring Hill City has grown rapidly over the past few years. The city has added about 3,906 residents since the last special census. The census, which collected the names and addresses of Spring Hill residents, was conducted between Oct. 1, 2017, and Feb. 28, 2018. The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development certified the official population of Spring Hill as 40,436 in 2018. This is a 10.7 percent increase from the 2016 census.

State Route 396 passes through the eastern portion of Spring Hill, with its only exit within city limits. State Route 396, known locally as Saturn Parkway, terminates at Beechcroft Road, near the GM plant. The city is also served by U.S. Route 31, which is the main north-south arterial, and State Route 247, which is the major east-west road.

The area around Springhill was home to the Pine Woods Lumber Company, which thrived on its timber. This company later sold its wood products plant to Georgia Pacific, closing it in 1979. The last remnant of International Paper is a container division. It remained in business until 1972. And with the downturn in the petroleum industry, the city's economy suffered.
