In 1821, Rawson Alley and William Alley, Jr. settled the area, and in 1859, William Alley donated land for the extension of the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway. The railroad eventually built a depot and roundhouse on Alleyton's property, making it the largest city in Colorado County.

In the early 19th century, Alleyton City was home to several small businesses. The city had a population of 65 people in 1986. At that time, there were only six businesses. They included several places for entertainment, a welding service, and an auto-salvage yard. The population grew to 165 people in 2000.
