The art scene in New York City is vibrant, and the arts are well represented by museums, galleries, theaters, and performance venues. New York City has more than 2,000 arts organizations, and the government funds arts and culture with a budget larger than the National Endowment for the Arts. The 19th century brought wealthy business magnates who built a vast network of major cultural institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Carnegie Hall. Electric lighting helped create elaborate theater productions, and in the 1880s Broadway theaters started to feature a new stage form.
