The town was first settled in 1846 when a young doctor named James Azle Steward moved into a cabin built by John Rumsfeldt. After a few years, other settlers settled near the area's streams. In 1881, the town was home to a post office, which lent the name of the town to the postal service. Later, the town's name was changed at Steward's request.
