In 1890, a post office was established in Bigfoot. The post office was named Bigfoot after William A. Wallace, a pioneer who had lived in the area. The city had a school, a general store, and a public post office by the end of the century.

By the 1940s, Bigfoot had about 210 residents. It was home to a post office, two businesses, and a museum, and was a farming community. In the 1980s, it was still a farming community, but there were more businesses in town, and the population dropped to about 100 by the 1970s. The city is also home to a Bigfoot Museum, which was modeled after the Bigfoot Wallace cabin. The museum was established in 1957 by John Bunyan Blackwell and contains artifacts given by others.
