The town was originally known as Blossom Prairie. In 1835, Davy Crockett reportedly crossed the Red River into Texas near Blossom. William Patton's expedition into Texas was in 1836, and the roadbed was graded in 1873. The railroad never materialized, however, and freight was still transported by horseback. The town also had a passenger depot on Front Street.
