In July 1903, Lamesa City was incorporated, part of the Slaughter Ranch that later became famous for producing the "Lazy S" soda. Ranching in the area had been in existence for 30 years. The land was plotted out by several residents. The town was a few miles south of Chicago. The town's name was derived from the Spanish word "mesa," meaning "tableland," and referring to the high plateau in the South Plains.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 24,186 households in Lamesa City. Of those households, 39.8% are family units with one spouse and two children under the age of 18. Eleven percent are single person households, and 11.6% have a female householder without her husband. The population of Lamesa City is comprised of men, women, and senior citizens.
