Laughlin AFB is the largest pilot training base in the USAF, located near Del Rio, TX. It is also near an international bridge to Coahuila, Mexico. The base was named for 2nd Lt. Jack Thomas Laughlin, a native of Del Rio who was killed in the early days of World War II while flying over Java. Laughlin AFB was officially established in the early 1940s, but the 47th Flying Training Wing relocated to Randolph AFB.
