Founded in 1770, Ryegate is named for the Harvey Company. Many of the lots in the city are still owned by the company. There are a few prominent families in the city, including Rev. Peter Powers, who preached in Ryegate in 1785. A few years later, Gen. Whitelaw visited Ryegate and called on Rev. Powers. He was the business head of the Company in Scotland and preached from pine money.

Charles E. Dean was born in Ryegate on March 1, 1843, died on June 29, 1909. He was the father of three children: Mary Jane Dutton (Jan. 11, 1848), and Sarah J. Dunn (Jan. 16, 1844). Other notable families in Ryegate are Rev. Jas. Milligan (Jas. Milligan), b. March 24, 1800, and Isabel Alden (Aug. 22, 1848).
