South Londonderry, Vermont Statistic: Population, Charts, Map, Steets and More

There are several places in New Hampshire that are famous for its steep streets and scenic beauty, including Londonderry City. Here are a few of them. Also known as 'the Walled City,' Londonderry is the home of a historic castle. The town's history is deeply rooted in the Protestant Reformation. Its walls, which were never breached during the late 17th century Siege of Derry, are a defining feature of the city.

Derry is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Ireland. The first written references date back to the sixth century, when Saint Columba established his monastery on the site. By the sixteenth century, the city was settled by English and Scottish Protestants. The city's name, Londonderry, reflected the fact that the city was established by London guilds. However, many Irish Nationalists were opposed to the city's designation as a UK city.

In the past 20 years, Derry-Londonderry has been plagued by violence. The January bombing and two subsequent hijackings of vans were blamed on the New IRA. Then, in April, two other dissident republicans killed a police officer. The result was the largest scale violence in the city since the Troubles. In addition, Derry-Londonderry is still overwhelmingly Catholic, but Protestants have raised concerns over the city's divisions. Local leaders are seeking to mend these divisions.

Derry City has had an ongoing conflict with the Unionists since its founding. After the conflict, the city and Strabane District Council approached the British government to change the name of the city. In 1984, the Londonderry City Council changed its name to Derry City Council, which included both the city and the rural area. The city and Strabane City district merged in 2015 after a local government reform.
