The unincorporated village of South Newfane is located in Windham County, Vermont, along the Rock River. It is located southwest of Newfane. The population is 65 people. There are many different types of homes in the city. The median income is $26,042 per year. The poverty rate is 7.34%.

The earliest inhabitants of the area believed the land to be suitable for farming and settlement. Early settlers attributed their long life to the area's healthy environment. The Erie Canal brought a large number of new settlers to the area. Historically, the two communities have had overlapping histories.

The late 1800s saw Newfane become a center for political events. The Patterson Hotel, which opened in 1869, was a major part of town life. The hotel featured popular food and drinks and was a popular place to stay. However, the building was eventually torn down in 1906.

In the same year, the Olcott station opened for general service. Its first general freight agent was William H. Corwin. As the population of South Newfane City increased, the area saw an increase in commercial and residential development. By 1902, the city had a population of nearly 1,000 people. The city also had a population of fewer than ten foreigners. In addition, the Hispanic population and the Black race were significantly lower than the averages for the state. It also had a much higher percentage of people with a bachelor's degree.

The Newfane Basket Manufacturing Company opened on McKee Street on April 15, 1887. It became profitable early on and was one of the larger businesses in the town. Soon, it expanded into other businesses and expanded its operations to include lumber and millwork. It eventually became known as Newfane Lumber & Manufacturing Company.
