Bent Mountain is located on the Bent Mountains Plateau in southwest Roanoke County, Virginia. This area is also close to neighboring counties, including Floyd County. During Prohibition, the city was home to the largest distillery in Roanoke County. Its population of approximately 2,000 is a relatively low number, but that doesn't mean that residents don't speak a variety of languages.

In addition to being located near a large university, the Old Mill Plantation/Bent Mountain neighborhood also provides residents with many opportunities to volunteer in the community. The city council rewrote the city's land use codes, resolving local residents' concerns that outside forces were dictating their community and its standards of belonging.
