Bent Mountain is located on the Bent Mountains Plateau in southwest Roanoke County, Virginia. This area is also close to neighboring counties, including Floyd County. During Prohibition, the city was home to the largest distillery in Roanoke County. Its population of approximately 2,000 is a relatively low number, but that doesn't mean that residents don't speak a variety of languages.
The Old Mill Plantation neighborhood and Bent Mountain are both residential areas, largely consisting of single family homes. This neighborhood's total dominance of single-family homes is unique, with no other types of residential property. The percentage of single-family homes here is higher than 95.3% of all U.S. neighborhoods. Because of its low population density and high percentage of college educated parents, Old Mill Plantation and Bent Mountain have many desirable attributes for families.
The Old Mill Plantation/Bent Mountain neighborhood is particularly desirable for young professionals. Its average commute time is only 15 minutes. This is much shorter than the average commute time for most Americans. In addition to being located near a large university, the Old Mill Plantation/Bent Mountain neighborhood also provides residents with many opportunities to volunteer in the community. The city council rewrote the city's land use codes, resolving local residents' concerns that outside forces were dictating their community and its standards of belonging.
