It has a total population of 817 as of the 2010 census. This small city was incorporated on January 25, 1974. Fincastle's name likely comes from a Virginia county, which was part of what is now the modern state of Kentucky. In the late 18th century, Botetourt County's western boundaries were much different from the current state of Kentucky. As such, the settlement became the western gateway to the West for a generation of pioneers.

The population of Fincastle is located in the east end of Louisville, Kentucky between Highway 22 and Westport Road. It's close to many local shopping centers and restaurants. Fincastle is a Class 6 city and is home to a legislative body consisting of a Mayor, an Attorney, a Treasurer, a Secretary, and two Commissioners. Fincastle's first log courthouse was constructed on the designated court square in 1776. This building is still used for county government functions, including elections, and has a huge archive of public records. Fincastle was home to many prominent Virginians, including George Washington and Patrick Henry. During the Revolutionary War, the Anglican church was disbanded, but Presbyterians soon rebuilt it in Greek Revival style. Fincastle also became a regional center for commerce, as well as a wool industry center.
