Fincastle's name likely comes from a Virginia county, which was part of what is now the modern state of Kentucky. In the late 18th century, Botetourt County's western boundaries were much different from the current state of Kentucky. During the Revolutionary War, the Anglican church was disbanded, but Presbyterians soon rebuilt it in Greek Revival style. Fincastle also became a regional center for commerce, as well as a wool industry center.
