Historically, Jenkins Bridge City has been an industrial town that was once dominated by coal mining. When the coal companies departed, their scarred landscape was never a pretty sight. Today, however, the area is largely industrial with a thriving warehousing industry. Today, the area is home to the Medal of Honor recipient Darwin K. Kyle. And despite its industrial history, the area is home to a strong military presence.

In 1898, the township was founded, and incorporated. Mayors were George E. Smith and F.B. McCaskey. The city became famous for the Lancaster Hotel, which offered shuttle services to Montgomery. In 1899, J.M. Jenkins built his Bee Hive factory, which would later become the largest in the United States. In addition, the city became home to the First National Bank.
